What Tint Percentage for Your Car?

“What percentage should I get?” is the most common question on automotive tint, and the answer surprises people: the percentage on the film is not the percentage you end up with on the window. Here is why, and how to choose for a car in South Florida.

VLT Is Glass Plus Film

Visible light transmission (VLT) is how much light gets through. But factory glass already blocks some light — most car glass is not 100% clear. When film goes on top, the two combine. A film rated at a certain VLT applied to glass that already blocks light gives you a lower total VLT than the film rating alone. The real number is the combination, not what is printed on the film box.

Shade Is Not Heat Performance

Darker is not automatically cooler, and darker is not automatically better. Two films can look equally dark and perform very differently on heat and glare — that is the whole point of ceramic film, which manages heat well without being the darkest option. Choosing purely by shade often means paying for the look and missing the comfort, or vice versa. The film type matters as much as the percentage.

Night Visibility

The darker you go, the harder it is to see out at night — especially for reversing, parking, and side mirrors. In South Florida, where you drive in the dark year-round, that matters.
